Munzón Gallery is pleased to feature a special presentation of Sergio Teran and Jerry Peña's work during the 23rd edition of SCOPE Art Show in Miami Beach from December 3-8, 2024.

This two-person presentation brings together the works of Sergio Teran and Jerry Peña, two artists whose practices navigate personal narratives to interrogate broader cultural and political landscapes. Both artists draw deeply from their Mexican-American heritage and working-class upbringings in Los Angeles, transforming their lived experiences into poignant reflections on identity, belonging, and socio-cultural mythologies.

Sergio Teran (b.1974, Los Angeles) graduated with a BFA from Art Center College of Design and has a Masters (M.A.) in Studio Art from New York University. He lives and works in Los Angeles where he is also an Associate Professor of Art at Cerritos College.

Sergio Teran was born in East Los Angeles and raised in a working class, immigrant family. He paints about personal experiences, his relationships and where he is from, but these subjectivities connect to wider ideas about cultural and political identity, socio-cultural mythologies, class, the immigrant experience, and inter-culturalism. Through his work as an artist and educator, Teran aspires to uplift marginalized perspectives, make them more visible, and create a sense of belonging.

Sergio’s work has been exhibited at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Robert and Frances Fullerton Museum; the Vincent Price Museum, who holds a piece in their permanent collection; Angeles Gate Cultural Center; Avenue 50 Studio; Nielsen Gallery (Boston); The University of Connecticut, and Taste like Chicken Art Space, in Brooklyn, NY. His work has been featured on KCET ArtBound, The Los Angeles Times and On Art and Aesthetics. In 2024 he completed a public commission for the Los Angeles County Department of Arts and Culture in collaboration with the Los Angeles Public Defenders office.

Jerry Peña, a first-generation Mexican American artist, explores family history, the history of Los Angeles, tensions of identity and assimilation, and his working class socioeconomic status within his work. His artwork incorporates found objects and employs textures and color as well as material experimentation that descends aesthetically from Southern California’s Kustom car culture, Rasquachismo, Abstract Expressionism to Post Minimalism. These images and compositions all intimately connect to his working-class background and offer a compelling glimpse into his unique experience in Southern California, specifically South East Los Angeles. Peña's work pieces together hallmarks of Americana and the Mexican American experience to create a visual conversation grounded in delicate symbols and memory objects that further bridges the gap between street aesthetics and studio practices.

Jerry Peña (b. Los Angeles, CA 1991) holds a Bachelor of Arts in Drawing and Painting from Cal State Long Beach. Recent exhibitions include:

A Rose By Any Other Name, Charlie James Gallery (Los Angeles CA 2024)

Nexus IV Raiz, Brand Library (Los Angeles CA 2023)

Group Shoe 3, House Of Seiko (San Francisco CA 2023)
