Josh Vasquez
Ghosts of Destiny
This exhibition brings together recent works exploring imagery of the American West, probing the ideas of Manifest Destiny and American exceptionalism through the sacrifices that they demand. The artist, in the process of projecting well-known images and creating large format pencil sketches on paper, distills the dissonance of American idealism, between the manufacturing of the story and its lived reality. Josh Vasquez, born 1992 in Los Angeles, is a multi-disciplinary artist whose work interrogates American mythologies through the investigation of advertising and propaganda.
Born and raised in Pico Union to a Salvadoran American family, Josh Vasquez earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts with an emphasis in drawing and painting from the CSU, Long Beach in 2017. He has exhibited work at Residency Gallery, The Torrance Art Museum, Tlaloc Studios, MUZEO, Stay Gallery, and Munzón Gallery. He is currently a candidate for a Master of Fine Art in Painting and Printmaking at Yale University.
